Update: This workshop was not properly advertised, and had a low turnout. In case you missed it, I will provide some of the materials that I used during the presentation.
Monday, October 30th 2006 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Butler Library Room 210
Web 2.0 is a lot like chess. Simple to learn, a lifetime to master. These “grokshops” will provide an overview of some of the common Web 2.0 tools and how they are being used in the academic setting. This will be a presentation for anyone interested in seeing what Web 2.0 has to offer in an academic setting, and help determine if its worth diving into the Web 2.0 world.

“Writing Your Life in Collage”
with Nikki Carroll
Join us at 7:00 pm in the 2nd floor, SE quadrant. We will explore how to craft short personal essay / creative nonfiction pieces through a patchwork of written images, including prose and poetry. We will read some excerpts from work that has been created in this format, and will use those excerpts to guide us in writing about our own experiences.

By Dan Dilandro, E. H. Butler Library Archivist at Buffalo State College
This month’s “October Surprise” snowstorm reminded me, among other things, not to store current tax receipts on an easily flooded basement floor, but also provided me with an interesting answer to a question often posed to archivists: “Why not just digitize archival material, providing easy and multiple access to scholars via the Internet?” On one hand, there is the ever-present problem of time and money and the fear of the unstable electronic medium and data migration corruption; but on the other, archives often hold original, unduplicated material that often has a somewhat “hidden” importance. While the paper itself may not have what we call “intrinsic” value, the information encoded into the material itself cannot be retrieved in simple copies.

Please bring your scariest poems to the Butler Library rooftop to share! Reading starts at 7 pm. In the event of rain, snow, extreme cold, poltergeists, dopple-gangers, or symmetrical book-stacking, the reading will be moved inside to the International Students Reading Area in the southeast quadrant of Butler Library’s third floor.

(Circulation Gallery on the first floor lower lobby)
This exhibit was on display from October 1 – December 1, 2006
This provocative exhibit aims to raise awareness of the “needless suffering and deaths of 50 billion innocent, feeling animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses.” There are posters discussing the health benefits of going vegetarian, placards with quotations from intellectuals, and a video installation playing the documentary film “Meet Your Meat” (not for the faint-hearted).

I had originally thought this was turned on, but as usual, it was a checkbox I had missed. Thanks to the WashtubLibrarian for pointing it out. I apologize to anyone out there that has tried to comment but was deterred by the need to register. You should be able to leave a comment, though we still do require a name and e-mail address. I look forward to hearing from the rest of the world…
