In November 2004, Google launched a new product called Google Scholar. Google Scholar includes references to, and in some cases the full-text of peer-reviewed articles, theses, books, and technical reports covering a variety of subject areas. See their excellent ”downloadable teaching tools” here (requires the free Adobe Reader). Google Scholar is always available on the library’s “Search the Web” page.
Should I use Google Scholar to find journal articles?
Think of Google Scholar as a new research tool to be used in addition to Butler Library’s periodical databases. Library databases cover a broad range of subject areas and have been selected to support the Buffalo State curriculum. Learn more about how to Find Articles and view a list of databases organized by subject and by title.
What if I use Google Scholar and am directed to pay for the full text of an article?
If you are asked to pay for an article you retrieve through Google Scholar, see if the article is available online through a library database. Click on Full-text Periodicals Online and type in the journal title. If one of our library databases provides full-text access to that journal, a link to that database will come up. Check to be sure that the database covers the date you need for your specific article.
If the library does not have online access to the journal you need, search the library catalog to find out if the journal is available in print.
If the journal isn’t available online or in print, take advantage of Butler Library’s ILLiad interlibrary loan service available to students, faculty, and staff of Buffalo State. Sign up for an ILLiad account to request articles and books not owned by Butler Library.
What if I need help from a librarian?
Ask a Librarian 24/7 has all the information you need to contact a librarian in person, by phone, by e-mail, or through live chat.
OK, I’m ready. How do I get to Google Scholar?
