This exhibit was on display from March 2007 – April 2007

The following description is from the artist:

“The photographs in this exhibit are crystals formed from two familiar substances, Epsom salts and vitamin C. They were made with a laboratory instrument called a polarizing microscope in which the crystal is placed between polarizers and magnifies, in this case, 60 to 100 times. The colors you see arise from birefringence, a property of certain materials which enables them to bend the plane of polarized light passing through them. Specialists use this property to determine the crystal’s molecular structure and measure its thickness to a few hundred thousandths of an inch.

“Because a digital camera responds differently than the eye, I have modified these images to more closely resemble the experience of actually viewing the crystals with the microscope. Please feel free to write your comments or e-mail me at jzim@netsync.net.”
