Dr. Robert B. Cantrick (1917-2006), composer and music professor at Buffalo State College, 1969-1985, gifted the Butler Library with copies of his major compositions for study and use. Dr. Cantrick’s music is of interest for its pioneering use of new flute sounds and its characteristic employment of other avant garde compositional techniques. Dr. Cantrick also donated to Buffalo State College what is thought to be the only extant copy of his reconstruction of the concert band version of Gustav Holst’s Hammersmith.

Dr. Cantrick’s family continues to donate heavily to the E. H. Butler Library, in hopes that Dr. Cantrick’s seminal work–and works–might be made widely available for study and performance.

William H. Tallmadge (1916-2004) was a professor of music at Buffalo State College from 1949 to 1976. Tallmadge graciously donated hundreds of audio recordings of African-American, gospel, jazz, and popular music to E. H. Butler Library. Known in the Buffalo area as an expert music lecturer, Tallmadge was a nationally sought-after expert on American folk and gospel music.

The Special Collections department of E. H. Butler Library hopes to convert Tallmadge’s legacy into easily sharable audio formats in order to continue his dream of making music accessible to all.
