Buffalo ReUse!

Presented by the Buffalo ReUse Crew

Buffalo ReUse is a Green Demolition crew/company that provides job training for at-risk young adults. Buffalo ReUse invests in the community by helping people stay in their homes. They do this by providing low-cost used building materials that can be used for property maintenance and which would have otherwise been thrown into landfills. They facilitate activities such as tree plantings, street blitzes and community gardens.

Professor Emeritus Fraser Drew and Distinguished Alumnus Hank Nuwer have collected 40 years of their correspondence into a new book! English Professor Fraser (Bob) Drew was the first Buffalo State professor to earn the coveted State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Award. At 95 he resides in the Buffalo area. To inspire students he corresponded with author Ernest Hemingway, and poets Robert Frost, Robinson Jeffers, Langston Hughes, and John Masefield. His Hughes letters and other gifts to the college reside in BSC’s Butler Library Special Collection. He is the author of a scholarly volume of Masefield’s work.

Social critic and writer Hank Nuwer is best known for his four books on hazing in society. He resides in Indiana and is a member of the BSC Class of 1968. MLA Handbook Undergoes Major Revisions

Posted by Dennis Reed, Jr. on April 9, 2009

The seventh edition of the MLA Handbook, published by the Modern Language Association, has just arrived and presents significant changes in MLA format. There are two copies of this new handbook on Reserve and one copy at the Reference Desk in the Information Commons. Here are some links to useful sites that provide more information on the changes:

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/15/
http://www.epcc.edu/nwlibrary/citingmla.htm

If you are using MLA style, please ask your instructor which edition you must use. If it is permissible to use the sixth edition, handbooks will be kept at the Reference Desk for the remainder of the semester. We also have print copies of a library-generated handout outlining the major points of the sixth edition, plus a link on the library home page to an electronic version of the same.

Exhibit: Antique Science Instruments

Posted by Dennis Reed, Jr. on April 7, 2009

By Nick Dalacu
(Display cases, upper lobby)
This exhibit was on display April 2009.

During the month of April the Library is featuring a unique exhibit of Antique Science Instruments, courtesy of Nick Dalacu, founder of the Niagara Science Museum located in the 1910 National Carbon Co. office building at 3625 Highland Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. This exhibit contributes to the dissemination of the role of science instruments for a more and more exact understanding of the physical world we live in. It educates us in our encounter with science. We can appreciate the preservation of antique instruments. At the same time this important cultural event is entertaining.

Calling Earth…National Cell Phone Recycling Week

Posted by Lisa Forrest on April 6, 2009

cell-phone-recyclingWondering what to do with your old cell phone? Don’t just let it sit in the back of your junk drawer– recycle it! Recycling the 100 million cell phones that are no longer used annually would save enough energy to power 18,500 US households for a year (epa.gov/cellphones). National Cell Phone Recycling Week runs April 6th- April 12th. Program partners including AT&T, Samsung, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless, are rolling out a series of in-store promotions while providing in-store and online recycling opportunities to assist consumers in the “eCycling” process. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, cell phones and accessories are made from valuable metals, copper, and plastics which require energy to extract and manufacture. Recycling cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions and conserves natural resources.

For information on where to recycle your unwanted phones, please refer to the EPA’s website
Convenient drop-off locations and mailing options are available.

Paper Doesn’t Grow on Trees: Reusable Paper Drive

Posted by Lisa Forrest on April 6, 2009

boby-paper-treeHow does your paper pile grow? In honor of Earth Day 2009, April 22, E. H. Butler Library will collect all recyclable paper that has been generated in the library. During the week of April 20th- 26th, join us in emptying your recycle bins (paper only) into our Paper Doesn’t Grow on Trees display located in the library lobby. The paper collected in the display will be reused to create scratch pads for students. While contributing to the display, take a moment to reflect upon a “green resolution” that you’d like to incorporate into your lifestyle (such as “I promise to use a reusable water bottle” or “I promise to shut down my computer when I leave the house”) and help us decorate the tree branches with “green promises.” For more information, visit the display in the library lobby beginning April 20th.
