One Long, Wild Conversation: May 2nd Book Launch and Signing

Professor Emeritus Fraser Drew and Distinguished Alumnus Hank Nuwer have collected 40 years of their correspondence into a new book! Join us in celebrating the publication of One Long, Wild Conversation: Selected Letters Between a Buffalo State Professor and His Student, a Writer on Saturday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the Director’s Conference Room (BL134) of E. H. Butler Library.

English Professor Fraser (Bob) Drew was the first Buffalo State professor to earn the coveted State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Award. At 95 he resides in the Buffalo area. To inspire students he corresponded with author Ernest Hemingway, and poets Robert Frost, Robinson Jeffers, Langston Hughes, and John Masefield. His Hughes letters and other gifts to the college reside in BSC’s Butler Library Special Collection. He is the author of a scholarly volume of Masefield’s work.

Social critic and writer Hank Nuwer is best known for his four books on hazing in society. He resides in Indiana and is a member of the BSC Class of 1968. He maintains a Hazing Collection at BSC’s Butler Library, the only scholarly collection in the world devoted to scholarship on hazing. His interviews with David Mamet, James Dickey, William Least Heat Moon and Kurt Vonnegut frequently get cited in scholarly studies.

MLA Handbook Undergoes Major Revisions

The seventh edition of the MLA Handbook, published by the Modern Language Association, has just arrived and presents significant changes in MLA format. There are two copies of this new handbook on Reserve and one copy at the Reference Desk in the Information Commons. Here are some links to useful sites that provide more information on the changes:

If you are using MLA style, please ask your instructor which edition you must use. If it is permissible to use the sixth edition, handbooks will be kept at the Reference Desk for the remainder of the semester. We also have print copies of a library-generated handout outlining the major points of the sixth edition, plus a link on the library home page to an electronic version of the same.
